I can still remember when people could only rely on land lines to make their phone calls. It wasn’t a problem back then and everyone was very content to having a phone line at home before the start of cell phones which allowed everyone to instantly be reached at will. Then came the steady emergence of the internet back in the mid 90s and into the new millennium, which definitely has got to be one of the greatest assets, humanity has developed in the last hundred years. The internet is what gives us the possibility to place and receive calls using the VoIP technology.

The VoIP technology has increased in popularity mainly because of its cost advantages for consumers over regular telephone networks. Most North Americans pay a flat monthly bill for local telephone calls besides any other long distance calls they may make. VoIP calls can be made anywhere across the globe while being on the internet. Since the most people already have an internet service provider and that most internet connections are charged using a flat monthly fee structure, it becomes easy to understand why local land lines will soon be a thing of the past. Therefore, using the internet connection for both data traffic and voice calls can allow consumers to get rid of one monthly payment. In addition, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee structure for long distance calls.

Another area where a VoIP service will provide significant advantages is in regards to available features. Since VoIP is a digital technology, the available features are quite extensive when compared to traditional telephone services. Some of the available VoIP features do not even exist in the traditional market, while others are greatly enhanced, such as call waiting; call forwarding, voice mail or caller ID. Besides the obvious advantages of having these different available features, some of them can also be used to achieve significant cost savings as well. Traditional phone lines don’t normally include any extra features to its basic monthly fees. The use of all these possible features is generally added to the bill.

When voip was introduced, people asked why use VoIP when it just isn''t reliable, especially during power failure? It was a major concern at first, but it''s not now. Nowadays, if your power goes out, most service providers have a smart system that will redirect your calls to a secondary phone number, if your system is detected to be offline. With that particular advancement, the directed call can be transferred to your required alternative number such as your phone number and so on.

Considering now that cell phones are enabled to use the internet, it’s most likely only a matter of time before the VoIP technology is wide spread with phones instead of just through a computer connection. The combination of being capable to reach or be reached anywhere while using a system that’s cost effective, is most definitely the way of the future.
